The Stock Watch (Preseason Week #2)

Stock Watch Archives:

With second week of the preseason just about wrapped up, it’s time to re-examine the fantasy landscape, and there’s a lot going on. We’ve seen this past weekend some new players step up and emerge, some emerging options continue their ascension, and we’ve seen some situations that are a little disconcerting.

Of course, as always, we’ve also seen some injuries disrupt the marketplace.

But things are really starting to come into focus, so here’s my current market commentary.

Upgrades

Quarterbacks

Michael Vick (Phi) – We absolutely believe Chip Kelly when he says the Eagles’ QB job is neck-and-neck, but we’d also have to think Kelly is realistic. While Nick Foles has looked good so far in the preseason, Vick has looked much better. In the Eagles’ second preseason game, he finished 9-for-10 for 105 yards passing and an INT, while Foles completed 6-of-8 passes for 53 yards and a pick. Vick also added 2/20 rushing. The major difference: Vick’s interception came on an end-of-half heave, while Foles’ was in the endzone, the result of a very poor decision. So far, Vick looks calm running Kelly’s offense, and he even told reporters after the game that he’s reinvigorated and has fallen in love with the sport again. Through two games, he looks the part (remember, Vick looked bad in the preseason last year). If he keeps this up and wins the QB job, he has to be considered a #2 fantasy QB with upside. In fact, we’ll predict it now: Vick will be the Week One starter.

Brandon Weeden (Cle) – Let’s get this out of the way: We don’t know what Brown coach Rob Chudzinski is doing when he says Weeden still has to compete for his job, but in our minds there is no competition. With his second straight strong outing in the preseason, Weeden’s gap over Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer extended. Weeden finished 8/12, for 117 yards and 2 TDs in the win over the Lions, with both TDs going to TE Jordan Cameron (3/42/2). Weeden stood in the pocket and delivered the ball downfield, which is exactly what Chud and Norv Turner want from their QB. Weeden’s best two throws of the game may have been the first TD to Cameron, on which he saw Cameron get inside position on S Glover Quin and threw it behind two defenders, and a deep ball to WR Josh Gordon (3/72) on which he exhibited beautiful touch and accuracy. It’s only the preseason, but as we’ve said all summer: Weeden can play and he’s a good fit for this offense. If Weeden plays like this, the Browns have a chance to put up a lot of points.

Running Backs

Trent Richardson (Cle) – We wouldn’t have been upset if Richardson didn’t play at all this preseason, since the Browns should protect their investment, but now that he’s gotten through a game unscathed, we’re glad we got to see him. Against the Lions, Richardson finished with 33 yards on 6 carries, including an 18-yard run on which he seemed to be bottled up at the line but bounced off tacklers and kept his balance. Richardson looks healthy, and aside from the strong performance of Brandon Weeden so far, is the #1 reason we’re optimistic about the Brown offense. He’s a rock-solid top-7 fantasy pick.

Matt Forte (Chi) – The good vibes surrounding Forte in the new offense of coach Marc Trestman continued Thursday night, as he ripped off a 58-yard run on a toss play. He got caught from behind inside the 10-yard line, and WR Brandon Marshall finished off the drive with a TD catch. However, Forte later got a rare goal-line carry at the 3-yard line, and he finished off the drive with a TD behind rookie lineman Kyle Long and Jordan Mills. While we expect to see Michael Bush (who had a short TD run of his own) get the majority of the goal-line work, it was good to see the Bears give Forte a shot there in the preseason. But the overall performance of Forte (he finished with 74 yards and a TD on 8 carries) is enough reason to feel great about him. We’re starting to get the feeling that this offense might have some growing pains early, but Marshall is still a fine pick, and Forte definitely is as well.

LeSean McCoy (Phi) – It’s unlikely we even have to say anything in this blurb. Just watch this. The most laterally explosive back in the NFL, McCoy looked great in his first preseason action, finishing with 8 carries for 47 yards and a TD and 3 catches for 16 yards. Backup RB Bryce Brown missed Thursday’s game with a quad injury and is day to day, giving #3 RB Chris Polk a few extra reps, but he didn’t exactly endear himself to his new head coach. Polk carried five times for 24 yards, but he also lost a fumble in his extra work. The point is this: We think Brown will get his share of carries, but McCoy is locking himself into the first round in this offense.
