8/14/13:

FantasyGuru.com’s John Hansen has published his Draft Plan Manifesto for 12 years, and it’s the most detailed plan of action you’ll find anywhere this year. The plan, which checks in at 15,500 words, breaks down a specific plan of action by position for QBs, RBs, WRs, TEs, PKs, and Defenses. But it also covers general strategies and tips, lists specific players to target from 1-200, PPR leagues, 2-QB leagues, 6-Point per TD leagues, Auctions, IDP, and more.

But the meat and potatoes of plan will be the most detailed step-by-step guidance you’ll see this summer. In addition to covering a general plan of action for the first four rounds of your draft, the plan painstakingly maps out the first 13 rounds for each draft position from 1-12. So if you have the #10 pick or the #5 pick and aren’t sure what do to, the plan will show you a strong course of action using ADP as a guideline.

Here’s a snippet from the article published on 8/14 that covers a plan of action for those who have the #1 pick:

Drafting from slots 1-3

First up, with my first pick, I’m taking a RB no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Ideally, that’s the best way to start off a draft: selecting a stud runner who is young, durable, and versatile, and who immediately solidifies my backfield.

Let’s start from the #1 spot:

Team One

Adrian Peterson

This was previously a fairy tough spot because the quality RBs dry up quickly, and it’s earlier than I’d like to draft a QB, so per the ADP here on 8/14, these two players are fantastic options with my next two picks:

Randall Cobb
Reggie Bush

Note: You can sub out Bush for Stevan Ridley in a non-PPR.

That is a really good start because it has all the elements I want in a PPR: A #1 WR to be my foundation, and 2 RBs.

It’s odd that I like my team from the #1 spot here on 8/14 more than I did two weeks ago, but per the ADP I can next take these two options:

Le'Veon Bell
Pierre Garcon

So far, this is perfect. I may not be loaded at WR, but I have two players I really like to hold down the fort, and three great RB options.

Next up, I did miss out on my favorite values at QB in Cam Newton and Andrew Luck, but I can get a QB I like in the 6th still with:

Russell Wilson (or Tony Romo)

This isn’t a great spot for my TE, and I do have 3 RBs, so I clearly need to go WR. Anquan Boldin is there per the ADP, and he would be a very solid pick. But I’m feeling strong here, so let’s go for a knockout blow with this guy because he looks fantastic this summer:

T.Y. Hilton

This really is an unbelievable start, so let’s continue. I’m at an advantage here because I can plan ahead by looking at the ADP, but you can do that, too. It’s not fool-proof, but it’s definitely better than going in blind.

Looking forward, the quality depth RB guys are dwindling, and while I’ll be passing on a few really nice WRs here, I do see other strong options available later, so let’s grab these two upside guys:

Bryce Brown
Jermichael Finley

And now we can add some quality depth at RB and WR with:

Pierre Thomas
Chris Givens

It’s advisable to get a steadier backup TE if I take Finley, but I can’t help myself but to play to win, so let’s roll with another upside TE and get my backup QB here with

Coby Fleener
Sam Bradford

Here’s how this team stacks up:

Adrian Peterson
Randall Cobb
Reggie Bush
Le'Veon Bell
Pierre Garcon
Russell Wilson
T.Y. Hilton
Bryce Brown
Jermichael Finley
Pierre Thomas
Chris Givens
Coby Fleener
Sam Bradford

I really like this squad. I’m a little thin at WR, but finding another strong option in the late rounds or on the WW isn’t too much to ask.

We were talking in the office this week about how we’re still seeing people take unexciting players, even has-beens, over really appealing options. This team is quite “Gurrific” in that it’s entirely comprised of players whom we’re excited about and we’re targeting. There are no has-beens here, and mostly options who should be soon-to-be stars.
