Welcome to week two of The Stock Watch. As we stated last week, we’ll be updating this key feature each day to keep up with all the latest news and notes. So if you’re looking for a single place to check each week on what’s going on, this is it.
Upgrades
Recent news and/or performances have made us more optimistic about these particular players for fantasy purposes.
Quarterbacks
None of note
Running Backs
Lamar Miller (Mia) – We wrote about Miller last week, but there’s still more positives to report. According to the Miami Herald, Miller had a particularly impressive scrimmage over the weekend. Miller’s day included a wheel route for a TD (he wasn’t effective as a receiver last year) and broken tackles, something that coach Joe Philbin admitted the club needed to see more of. Miller is reportedly running with more purpose in Bill Lazor’s more open offense, and with Knowshon Moreno still sidelined and Daniel Thomas still slow (and battling a hamstring injury), it’s looking more and more like Miller will open 2014 as the Dolphins’ lead back.
Andre Williams (NYG) – We have to be careful to overrate what happened in the Hall of Fame Game, but Williams looked impressive out there on Sunday. Getting some first-team reps with QB Eli Manning, Williams carried 7 times for 48 yards and converted a short TD against the Bills, seemingly confirming the Giants’ interest in him as a short-yardage back, which was evident in camp practices thus far. A lot of Williams’ production came against a second-string Bills’ defensive line, but he seemed to make more of the mediocre blocking in front of him than starter Rashad Jennings did. Obviously, Williams is going to be limited in some ways. He has perhaps the worst hands we’ve ever seen from an NFL skill player, and coach Tom Coughlin notoriously doesn’t tend to trust rookies in pass protection situations. But Williams’ stock has been on the rise since camp opened, and it’s not hard to see his earning significant rotational snaps – remember, Jennings has never been a full-time back.
Wide Receivers
Keenan Allen (SD) – We love Allen and have made it known, but one major concern those who are more lukewarm on him have expressed is that there may not be a whole lot of room for him to get better than he was in his rookie season – in other words, he’s not a physical freak with untapped potential. But Allen didn’t see it that way. According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, Allen felt he could improve his deep speed, and spent the off-season training to get better in that area. Teammates have noticed the improvement, including QB Philip Rivers, and it’s a potentially exciting development for a Charger offense that was revitalized last year, but didn’t really stretch the field. Another dimension to Allen’s game, however subtle, makes him a better bet to end the season as a WR1 for fantasy.
Brandin Cooks (NO) – You don’t want to get too hyped about a rookie… but it’s easy to see why Cooks could be a serious fantasy contributor early in his NFL career. First of all, his situation is great, playing with Drew Brees and under one of the NFL’s best play-callers in Sean Payton. There’s seemingly something new every day on how Cooks is taking Saints’ camp by storm, and linebacker Curtis Lofton summed up his play nicely toESPN.com: “I’m glad he’s my teammate.” Our latest ADP data has Cooks as a late 8th-round pick, and we’d expect that to rise with this hype. But we’d still much prefer Cooks to Sammy Watkins, who is going almost two rounds earlier but is in a much worse situation. Between Cooks’ unique talent, his head coach, and his high character, we’re starting to get a very, very good feeling about his potential this year.
Kelvin Benjamin (Car) – Benjamin missed some time with a bone bruise in his knee last week, but he returned to practice over the weekend and immediately became a favorite of QB Cam Newton. We weren’t in love with Benjamin coming out of Florida State, at least in terms of the landing spot in Carolina, but it’s evident that the Panthers need someone to step up at the receiver position. Benjamin has more physical skill than the rest of the Panthers’ WRs combined (that may not be hyperbole), and if he continues to impress, it would be shocking if he wasn’t starting Week One. Our current ADP data has him as an 11th/12th-round cusp pick in a 12-team PPR, and that’s damn appealing for a player who fills such a huge need on this team. He’s really starting to rise up our draft board.
