FantasyGuru.com: 2012 Draft Plan Released! (8/7/12)

August 7, 2012

One of our most anticipated preseason articles has been released! John Hansen’s annual Draft Plan Manifesto is on the site, and it’s been tweaked this year to help fantasy owners plan out their drafts better than ever before.

This year’s plan (15,000 words strong) includes a ton of insightful tips and a positional overview as usual, but the difference in 2012 is that Hansen breaks down three possible drafts for four ranges of picks and illustrates his plan for dominance in 2012. For example, if you’re drafting in the 1-3 spot, Hansen breaks down the first ten rounds of three different drafts starting in the 1-3 hole and breaks down the various routes one could go and the players he’s targeting. He does this for 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 and more.

We’ve been told time and time again this article alone is worth the rate of subscription! So subscribe now and get ready to get excited about your draft (s).

Here’s a snippet:

Drafting from slots 1-3

First up, with my first pick, I’m taking a RB no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Ideally, that’s the best way to start off a draft: selecting a stud runner who is young, durable, and versatile, and who immediately solidifies my backfield. So if I’m picking 1-3, I’m taking either:

Arian Foster

Ray Rice

LeSean McCoy

After that, I’ll be waiting to see if anyone of note falls to me for my second and third picks, and there are plenty of players I’ll have my eye on, so I’ll be flexible.

First and foremost, if an extremely appealing RB falls to the end of the second round that will be very temping for me, so I will seriously consider one of the following if they (somehow) are available:

Trent Richardson

Darren McFadden

Chris Johnson

DeMarco Murray

Matt Forte – Especially appealing in a PPR league

That may be a pipe dream, but the good news is I’m flexible, and all I want are impact players, so I could go QB, TE, or WR. I list WR last simply because there’s great depth at that position. So most likely, I’m looking at the following players:

Jimmy Graham

Matthew Stafford

Rob Gronkowski

Cam Newton

You can’t go wrong with any of them, really. And obviously the direction you go will affect your next few picks at least. I can’t really get into every single scenario, but you should get the picture.

It is possible that all the players listed above are gone, however, and at that point, I’d be forced to take a wideout, most likely, since I already have my stud RB and no QB or TE is worth taking. To me, it would come down to the following players, most likely:

Larry Fitzgerald

A.J. Green

Julio Jones – If I really wanted to swing for the fences.

Or steady veterans like:

Roddy White – Nothing wrong with him in a PPR.

Steve Smith

Let’s say for argument’s sake that I had the 2nd pick overall and I took Ray Rice. And then on the way back, the best impact player available was Rob Gronkowski, and I take him. For my next pick, I have a tough call between maybe reaching for a RB like Doug Martin (that’s a little high), taking a WR (still plenty of great ones available), or looking at a QB.

I have to say, since I know there’s no way in hell he’s making it back to my for my fourth pick, I might just swing for the feces and take this guy:

Michael Vick

Now that would be a great start:

Ray Rice

Rob Gronkowski

Michael Vick

Let me quickly paint another couple of scenarios that are realistic.

Let’s say I have the 3rd pick overall and I take:

LeSean McCoy

Once again, I have my foundation back, so that’s a great start, no matter what. At pick #22, if Matthew Stafford, Rob Gronkowski, or Cam Newton fell to me, any of them would be a great pick. Although I’m cheating by 1-2 picks based on our ADP (which are hardly 100% accurate), let’s assume one of those QBs is available, and let’s assume that it’s Stafford. For my next pick, I don’t think there will be a RB worth taking, and there definitely won’t be a TE worth grabbing, so I’ve got to go WR, and once again my choices will likely be:

Brandon Marshall – Solid in PPR

A.J. Green

Wes Welker – Obviously solid in PPR

Julio Jones

Of course, I love young players with special ability, so to be honest I’d probably go with either Green or Jones. I do have Green higher for now (it’s close), so let’s go Green, which gives me:

LeSean McCoy

Matthew Stafford

A.J. Green

Once again, that’s fantastic.

Let’s do one more scenario, and this time let’s take this guy:

Arian Foster

When it comes back to me after that long wait, I’m probably out of luck when it comes to high-end RBs and TEs I’m targeting, so it comes down to QB and WR. I have the double pick in this 12-team league, so let’s say I’m feeling particularly strong and I go this route:

Julio Jones

Michael Vick

That would give me:

Arian Foster

Julio Jones

Michael Vick

Yet again, this is an unbelievable start.

In each scenario, I’m getting true impact players I feel good about, and that’s what I want. Let’s quickly go a little deeper into the draft for each of these teams and see how it shapes up…….
